Capsule awarded at the 2022 8th e-Learning Excellence Awards
We’re overjoyed that Capsule, our pioneering clinical case-based learning resource, has been given the recognition it deserves. It was awarded second place overall at the international 2022 8th e-Learning Excellence Awards, making it one of the top three finalists alongside other incredible e-learning projects from across the world.
With 26 submissions from 12 countries, we’re honoured to have made it to second place and it’s a testament to the work of Brighton and Sussex Medical School, Ocasta and Imperial College London, who presented Capsule to the judges.
Why Capsule is crucial for success in a clinical setting
Capsule is a clinical case-based learning resource that boasts a direct correlation with medical exam performance. It combines 700+ real-world clinical cases, quiz creation capabilities and advanced user analytics to drive medical knowledge of real-world clinical case scenarios covering 100% of the MLA Content Map.
Capsule was developed to support undergraduate medical students with their decision-making skills in a clinical setting. This is because a key part of undergraduate medical training is clinical placements, where students can actively apply a large volume of knowledge to a range of healthcare practices. The challenge for medical students and course leaders is both the volume of knowledge required and opportunity to apply this to all clinical situations as required by the Outcomes for Graduates curriculum of the General Medical Council.
Being able to practise decision-making with instant feedback in a safe environment is paramount to real-world success as a practising clinician. It means that students can virtually follow a patient’s journey allowing them to realistically solve problems which could arise in a real-life setting.
Capsule’s outstanding contribution to the medical learning landscape
Aside from being a fundamental learning tool for practising clinicians, the team behind Capsule has been working hard to expand its impact in the medical training space to improve the standard of learning worldwide.
Currently, up to 24,000 cases are being completed per week and there are over 3000 active users most months.
The clinical case-based structure of Capsule and its universal digital platform means it has great potential for use in other medical and healthcare courses. It has already seen success internationally, being used in several medical schools outside of the UK including Australia, Rwanda and Ukraine.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a critical and urgent need for alternative teaching methods that were digitally accessible but still able to provide highly-applied learning affordances. Capsule was uniquely placed to support this and was identified by the MSC as one of three digital learning resources that helps support UK medical students.
The overall objectives of the Capsule learning resource
To support schools by providing trusted clinical cases, medical scenarios and analytics to drive medical knowledge across the entire curriculum.
To provide students with a consistent opportunity to encounter the full range of clinical presentations and conditions of the curriculum and medical specialties.
To provide a self-directed learning resource with content that is explicitly aligned to the curriculum, pitched at the correct level and validated by experienced clinical faculty.
To make the learning resource applicable to all medical students in the UK through alignment with the content with the Medical Licensing Assessment (MLA).
To provide a high-quality and robust digital experience for users.
To utilise a range of digital tools to maximise engagement and effectiveness.
We’re dedicated to learning excellence in the medical space, and this award is a huge achievement which reflects our ongoing commitment.
